When a student enrolls into high school, there are several transitions to make. There are much more classes to take, people to meet, and goals to reach; including tests such as the SAT. The general high school experience can be overwhelming for some students. However, how well a student can succeed and will ever succeed will begin to be determined here. It is a priority that parents play a dramatic role in their child’s high school career. Parents and high school students nationwide of low socioeconomic class, low education level, or an unstable family should be informed of the long term benefits education has to offer because it would drastically decrease the rate of high school dropouts. Some parents; however, also lack the understanding of the importance of a high school educat ion or have not yet completed high school themselves. The parents of high school students do not realize the opportunities there are to engage with their child’s high school education. The lack of involvement may make a student feel that there is no one to support them. Many parents have the potential to improve their involvement in their child’s success. The risk factor that contributes to high school dropouts when addressing parental involvement is the parents’ educational level. It is common that in most cases, students who drop out come from families where the parents themselves did not spend more than eight years in school (Levin). It is important to inform parents and students alike to have an understanding of the value of a high school education so that parents can provide enough support to their children that will help them throughout high school. Financial issues will often cause a parent to rely heavily on their son or daughter to drop out of high school once they have become at least sixteen years old. Families of low socioeconomic status or that are dysfunctional face difficulties that must be tended to immediately. For example, groceries and clothing for the entire household
